Cataract surgery

Which cataract lens might suit you?

During cataract surgery your cloudy lens is replaced with a clear artificial lens (an IOL). There are several types, and the right one depends on how you use your eyes. Answer seven short questions and we'll show you which types are worth asking your surgeon about.

This takes about two minutes. Nothing you enter leaves your device. It helps you prepare for your consultation; it isn't a recommendation. Your surgeon decides after measuring your eyes.

The four main lens types

Each diagram shows light entering the eye from the left. With a lens that is working well, the light comes to a sharp focus on the retina at the back of the eye. The small circle shows what the lens itself looks like.

Chart comparing which distances (near, intermediate and far) each lens type keeps in focus without glasses
Diagram of a monofocal lens focusing light to a single point on the retina
Monofocal. Sharp vision at one distance, usually far. Most people use reading glasses afterwards. The fewest halos at night, and usually the lowest cost.
Before-and-after diagram of astigmatism corrected by a toric lens to a single sharp focus
Toric. Corrects astigmatism, where the front of the eye is curved more in one direction than the other. Toric versions exist for monofocal, EDOF and multifocal lenses.
Diagram of an EDOF lens stretching focus into a range for distance and intermediate vision
EDOF (extended depth of focus). Stretches the focus to cover distance and the middle range, like a computer screen or car dashboard. Fine print may still need glasses. Some people notice mild halos at night.
Diagram of a multifocal lens creating separate near, intermediate and far focal points
Multifocal or trifocal. Several focus points for near, intermediate and far, for the least need for glasses. Rings or glare around lights at night are common at first and usually become less noticeable over a few months.

Common questions

Is the result a recommendation?

No. It shows which lens types match what you've told us, so you can have a more useful conversation with your surgeon. The final choice depends on measurements of your eye and on its overall health, which only an examination can show.

Can I get a toric version of any lens?

Toric designs are available for monofocal, EDOF and multifocal lenses. If you have noticeable astigmatism, your surgeon will usually discuss a toric version of whichever type suits you.

Why might my surgeon suggest something different?

Some lenses aren't a good idea with certain eye conditions, such as macular degeneration, advanced glaucoma or significant dry eye, and some depend on the exact shape and length of your eye. Your pre-operative tests settle this.

How much does cataract surgery cost here?

At Akshar Eye Clinic, cataract surgery ranges from ₹30,000 to ₹1,80,000 per eye. The difference is mainly the lens you choose; the surgery itself is the same. Many health insurance policies cover cataract surgery.
