How eye conditions can change what you see
Choose a condition and move the slider to see how it might affect an everyday view, here the reception at our clinic. It can help you understand what a parent or grandparent is going through, or why a check-up matters even when your eyes feel fine.
Normal vision
These are simplified illustrations to help explain each condition. Real vision loss is different for every person and can affect one eye or both. In the early stages most of these conditions cause no change you would notice, which is why regular eye check-ups matter.
Common questions
Why does the glaucoma view fade rather than go black at the edges?
People with glaucoma rarely describe a black tunnel. More often, parts of their side vision become blurred, faded or simply missing, and the brain fills in the gaps, which is why it goes unnoticed for so long. We've tried to show that more honestly.
Can these conditions be treated?
Cataract is treated with surgery that replaces the cloudy lens. Glaucoma can't be reversed, but drops, laser or surgery can stop it progressing. Wet macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy can often be treated with injections or laser, and do best when caught early.
Who should get their eyes checked regularly?
Everyone over 40, anyone with diabetes (a dilated retina check every year), people with a family history of glaucoma, and anyone who notices a change in their vision.
The simulations are illustrations, not medical images, and cannot tell you whether you have an eye condition. Only an eye examination can do that.
